ANOTHER FATAL CRASH MAY BE LINKED TO GENERAL MOTORS (GM) ignition-switch defect

For several weeks, CBS News has been reporting on its investigation into a General Motors (GM) recall.  At least 13 people have died in accidents linked to an ignition-switch defect. CBS News' reporting showed GM was aware of the problem years before the recall.  On Tuesday, a congressional committee opened an investigation.

Last month, GM began a recall of 1.6 million cars including Chevrolet Cobalt made from 2005 to 2007, Pontiac G5s, Saturn Ions and Pontiac Soltice, among others.

GM now says ignition switches can turn to off or accessory when they're bumped, or if a driver has a heavy key ring. When that happens, a car has no power steering, no power brakes, and the seat belts and airbags don't work.

It is reported that GM changed the switch design in 2006 but never notified customers!

GM says it won't have the parts to begin the repairs until April.

GM recalls 100,000 vehicles over crash-safety concerns.| Avalanche | CTS | Escalade | Silverado

NATIONAL - The AP recently reported General Motors is recalling nearly 100,000 vehicles to address issues related to crash safety. Postings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said GM was recalling nearly 96,000 2005 to 2007 models of the Cadillac CTS for airbag defects.

GM said "repeated flexing of the sensing mat in the passenger seat can cause the mat to bend or fold so much that the sensor may not detect a passenger is sitting in the seat. Therefore, the sensor wouldn't activate the airbag in the event of a crash."

The automaker also recalled about 1,300 2011 models of the Chevrolet Avalanche 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Cadillac Escalade, and Silverado 1500 for rear axle defects that can cause unexpected crashes.

GENERAL MOTORS LITIGATION - Current claims against GM "not worth pursuing."

NATIONAL - According to an article in The Kansas City Star, "When the 'new' General Motors emerged from bankruptcy earlier this month, consumer groups praised the agreement reached to ensure that the automaker would assume liability for future lawsuits over vehicle defects."

But "those with claims pending against GM would have to seek compensation through the bankruptcy court process, an avenue that most lawyers and experts agree would at best yield 10 cents on the dollar," making them "not worth pursuing."

GM - Recalls 277,000 vehicles

GM recalled about 277,000 vehicles on Friday because of a potential defect in the shift lever that could cause a vehicle to roll away.GM said the recall involves 2009 model year versions of the Buick Enclave; Chevrolet Cobalt, HHR, Malibu and Traverse; GMC Acadia; Pontiac G5 and G6; and the Saturn Aura and Outlook. GM spokeswoman Carolyn Markey said about 75,000 of the recalled vehicles had been purchased and the remainder were still at dealerships. Markey said dealers were inspecting the vehicles to see if they had any problems.

No crashes or injuries have been reported, Markey said. In some cases, the shift lever and the transmission gear's position may not match, meaning a driver could move the shifter to the park position but the transmission gear may not be in park. The potential defect could lead to a vehicle rolling away and crashing or make it more difficult for the driver to restart the car. Owners are expected to be notified about the recall in late March.

Dealers will inspect the vehicle and may replace the shift cable if necessary.
