Federal investigators say there was no electronic recorder on a truck that crossed the median and killed the truck driver and 10 others.

A National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) spokesman said, “along with lacking a recorder, the manual log kept by the driver was destroyed in the fire caused by the crash.” The manual log is generally one part of the investigation that is looked at to determine how long a driver had been on the road.

The truck crossed the median striking a van carrying a group to a wedding. Two young children survived the crash.

The investigation revealed that the truck driver’s cell phone was active around the time of the crash.

NATIONWIDE - A new analysis of government data reveals that more than 28,000 motor carrier companies that operate 200,000 trucks have violated federal safety regulations. According to the FMCSA, more than 4,000 people die every year in collisions with trucks and 80,000 more are seriously injured. Also, though trucks make up less than four percent of all passenger vehicles on U.S. roads, they are involved in 12 percent of all motor vehicles fatalities.

The trial bar association, the American Association for Justice (AAJ), said it found commuters are sharing roads with trucks that have incurred thousands of safety violations, such as defective brakes, bald tires, loads that dangerously exceed weight limits and drivers with little or no training or drug and alcohol dependencies.

AAJ also maintains that the minimum insurance requirements for commercial trucks are "completely inadequate to compensate those who have been seriously injured in a collision involving multiple vehicles or multiple injured individuals." In 1980, Congress set the minimum level of insurance to $750,000; when adjusted for inflation, $750,000 is just $292,000 in 1980 dollars, according to the analysis.

While large trucking companies may carry more than the required level of coverage, smaller companies often carry just the bare minimum. An analysis of the U.S. trucking industry found that 87 percent of the companies in violation of safety standards are small companies that have fleets of 10 trucks or less. PINELLAS COUNTY — A Pinellas County utilities truck crashed into a Christmas supply store Monday, slightly injuring the driver and putting the one-story building in danger of collapse, authorities said. It happened at 3:26 p.m. at Blind Pass Road and 75th Avenue, when the white truck went through the plate glass window of K. Kringles Christmas Shoppe, a holiday-themed store that sells ornaments and collectibles, officials said.

The driver of the truck, who was not identified, was treated at the scene by St. Pete Beach Fire Department paramedics, but was not seriously injured, said Fire Marshal Ernie Hand. He was cited for careless driving and released, said Sgt. Bruce Centofanti of the St. Pete Beach Police.

There were several people in the store at the time, but they escaped serious injury, officials said. Hand surveyed the building and ordered it shored up by a contractor to prevent collapse.
