PINELLAS INJURY ATTORNEY | PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT | GULF BLVD. |

PINELLAS COUNTY - Crossing the streets in Pinellas County can be deadly.  In recent years, Pinellas was the only county in West Central Florida that had an increase in pedestrian fatalities. According to Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) statistics, 30 people died.

This year FDOT officials are optimistic.  "Our pedestrian fatalities, even all of our traffic fatalities are down in percentage right now," said Kris Carson, a spokesman with Florida Department of Transportation.

Pinellas County is on track to have the lowest number of pedestrian deaths since 2004.

One reason the numbers could be lower is the new initiatives like the pedestrian flags that are now up along several busy roads. Pedestrians along Gulf Boulevard are actually using the pedestrian flags when they cross the road.  However, some people who walk around Gulf Boulevard everyday are still worried pedestrian accidents.

Florida Injury Attorney G. Alan Tripp, Jr. urges both drivers and pedestrians alike to use due care at intersections and while crossing a busy road.

Florida • PEDESTRIAN • AVOID ACCIDENT • CARS • TRUCKS • INTERSECTION COLLISONS • SAFETY COMES FIRST •

As a pedestrian, you are at a major disadvantage when crossing streets, intersections and standing on corners. You are not always visible to drivers; especially for large truck and bus drivers and you don't stand a chance if a vehicle hits you. Pedestrians need to be careful of all vehicles and never take chances when they are sharing the road with large vehicles, like trucks and buses.

Here are some safety tips that can keep you safe when walking from one destination to another.

  • Walk on sidewalks and in crosswalks whenever possible. It is important to pay attention to walk signals and keep a safe distance when standing on street corners.
  • Be careful of the blind spots, or No-Zones, around cars, trucks, and buses when walking near or around them.
  • Always assume the driver does not know that you are there.
  • Use caution when crossing intersections and streets. You may think vehicles will stop for you, but they may not see you or even be able to stop.
  • Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially when walking at night. Dressing to be seen will make it safer for you and drivers.

U. S. Hwy 19 - Weeki Wachee to St. Petersburg

U.S. Highway 19 may be the most dangerous road in America for pedestrians who have to cross it or walk along it, but it has plenty of company. In a review of five years of federal crash data, it was found from coast to coast roads with no sidewalks, unsafe crossings, and speeding traffic was dangerous just because of where they are. The lesson here is pretty clear. In a land where the car is king, the person on foot better get out of the way.

And even the most deadly roads can be improved. In recent years US 19, (the worst road in the country) -- it's getting better! Recent improvements benefit both motorists and pedestrians. There are more sidewalks, highly visible signs that let drivers focus on the road, and even new overpasses at major intersections to decrease traffic conflicts. However, there’s still room for improvement!

As you travel on US 19 (Commercial Way) from Weeki Wachee and Spring Hill in Hernando County through Hudson, Bayonet Point, Port Richey, New Port Richey and Holiday in Pasco County, down through Tarpon Springs, Palm Harbor, Dunedin, Clearwater, Largo, Pinellas Park, into St. Petersburg the high volume of traffic is still of concern.

During the peak season (Thanksgiving to Easter) the traffic volume increases with out of town guests and tourists on vacation. These visitors are unfamiliar with the area and tend to cause or become involved in serious crashes. In addition, drivers exceeding the speed limit are a major factor in serious motor vehicle versus pedestrian accident crashes. Speeding contributes to nearly one-third of the nation's traffic fatalities, and on roads where drivers routinely speed; the risk is high, and deadly.
