PETE BEACH - Local news outlets are reporting that Mark Allen Johnson, a 45-year-old maintenance worker, was killed Wednesday morning when he was crushed by an elevator at Jacaranda Beach Villas, resort condominiums at the TradeWinds Resort on St. Pete Beach. ST. PETERSBURG - Bay News 9 reports that a 16-year-old St. Petersburg girl was killed while a passenger in an SUV driven by another 16-year-old girl. According to reports, the SUV was west on 40th Avenue Northeast when the driver became distracted and looked away from the roadway. Subsequently, the SUV veered to the right, jumping the curb and going up onto a sidewalk. The SUV continued onto a concrete barrier that separates the roadway and the sidewalk along the bridge near the Shore Acres neighborhood. The SUV became elevated and impacted metal guardrails that lined the north wall of the bridge. A portion of the metal guardrail went through the passenger's side windshield, killing the 16-year-old passenger upon impact. The driver of the SUV was treated for minor injuries at All Children's Hospital and released.

CLEARWATER - The Tampa Bay Times reports that a 78 year-old Clearwater man, Edward Ortwein, was hit by a car while walking his dog Friday, April 12, 2013. Sadly, Mr. Ortwein was seriously injured and later died of his injuries. The car that hit the man was driven by 35 year-old Clearwater resident Yvelise Bradley. The tragic incident occurred on East Drive, a small residential street near Sunset Point Road and Highland Avenue in Clearwater, where the two were neighbors. Bradley left the scene of the accident but was later tracked down and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
