CLEARWATER - The Tampa Bay Times reports that a 78 year-old Clearwater man, Edward Ortwein, was hit by a car while walking his dog Friday, April 12, 2013. Sadly, Mr. Ortwein was seriously injured and later died of his injuries. The car that hit the man was driven by 35 year-old Clearwater resident Yvelise Bradley. The tragic incident occurred on East Drive, a small residential street near Sunset Point Road and Highland Avenue in Clearwater, where the two were neighbors. Bradley left the scene of the accident but was later tracked down and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

HUDSON - Bay News 9 reports that a 10th grade student was hit by two vehicles as she attempted cross a street in Hudson, Pasco County, Florida today. The 16 year-old was taken to Bayonet Point Hospital with serious injuries. The two vehicles were identified as 2005 Suzuki Grand Vitara and a 1999 Ford F-150 pickup truck.

It is that time of year again when the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) wants consumers to put safety into play if fireworks are part of their upcoming Fourth of July celebrations.

Thousands of injuries occur with sparklers, firecrackers, and aerials, and some 200 fireworks injuries take place each day during the one-month period surrounding the holiday.

A new CPSC study indicates that in 2009 there were two deaths and nearly 9,000 emergency room visits for injuries resulting from fireworks related incidents. Most fireworks injuries occurred to those younger than 20 and, in many cases, resulted in the loss of a limb.

FHP: Driver rear-ends PSTA bus in St. Pete ♦ Driver and passengers onboard PSTA bus injured

ST. PETERSBURG – A car ran into the back of a PSTA bus Monday afternoon at 66th Street and 51st Avenue North.

The bus was letting passengers out when the accident happened. FHP reports that the driver failed to slow down and collided with the bus. The driver of the car was taken to Bayfront Medical Center. Two passengers on the bus were transported to the hospital for injuries.

This is the second accident involving a PSTA bus in less than a week.

Judge orders Toyota to preserve crashworthiness documents

NATIONAL - According to Bloomberg News, "Toyota Motor Corp., its units, lawyers and any other employees were ordered by a U.S. judge to preserve all documents about the 'crashworthiness' of its vehicles after the carmaker was accused of destroying lawsuit evidence."

The order stems from a lawsuit in which a former in-house attorney for Toyota, Dimitrios Biller, "claims Toyota destroyed documents that should have been retained as possible evidence in personal injury claims."

RAIN - DRIVER INATTENTION causes 31 vehicle pile up Interstate-4 - County Road 557 and U.S. 27 in POLK COUNTY between Tampa - Disney World

POLK COUNTY - A multivehicle crash closed one lane of Interstate 4 westbound at U.S. 27 on Sunday afternoon, backing up traffic for six miles. The first of 23 crashes happened at 4:43 p.m. and caused a chain reaction. Altogether, 48 vehicles were involved, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

FHP officials said there weren't any fatalities in the crash, but four people were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Two of the victims were taken by ambulance to Lakeland Regional Medical Center and two to Heart of Florida Hospital. The vehicles were moved to the side of the road by 5:30 p.m., and all westbound lanes were reopened.

All of the crashes remain under investigation.

The series of collisions were spread along a nearly two-mile stretch of the interstate, not far from where a massive I-4 pileup occurred in January 2008 when five people were killed and 70 vehicles were involved in crashes as smoke and fog hindered visibility.

DOZEN PEOPLE INJURED IN TAMPA HARTLINE BUS CRASH with pickup truck at 56th Street and Hillsborough Avenue in Tampa

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY -- At least a dozen people were injured in a crash involving a Hartline bus and a pick-up truck in Tampa this morning. According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, at least 12 people were injured when the bus and truck collided at the intersection of 56th Street and Hillsborough Avenue.

Ten passengers on the bus, the driver of the bus and the driver of the pick-up truck were all injured as a result of this intersection accident. The ten (10) passengers were taken to University Community, St. Joseph's and Tampa General hospitals. The truck driver was cited for violating the red light, troopers said. Alcohol was not involved in the crash.

Florida PIP benefits do not extend to the passengers on the bus. The driver of the pick-up truck will be eligible for PIP benefits under his motor vehicle policy. The bus driver will be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits.

I-4 crash leaves two people in critical condition • Taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center • ORMC • Roll-over • NO SEAT BELTS

ORANGE COUNTY - Two people were in critical condition Sunday morning after the driver of a pick-up truck lost control on Interstate 4 and crashed into the concrete barrier. The crash shut down Interstate 4 for a few hours and sent both the driver of the vehicle and a passenger to the hospital.

Witnesses told police that the driver of the pick-up truck was traveling at a high rate of speed when he approached the South Street overpass on Interstate 4 at about 1:10 a.m. Sunday. The driver apparently lost control of the truck he was driving and went into the other lane, striking another vehicle before he hit the concrete barrier wall, Orlando Police said. The truck rolled several times, ejecting both the driver and the passenger in the truck.

They were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) with critical injuries. The driver and passenger in the other vehicle were not injured, police said.

DUI Crash Triggers 10-Car Pileup on I-4 near Orlando

ORLANDO – Sunday, June 7, 2009 - Three people were hurt and one man arrested after police said he lost control and caused a 10-car pileup on Interstate 4 early Sunday.

Police said the man lost control of his car and crashed around 3 a.m. Sunday at the Amelia Street exit of I-4 in downtown Orlando.When other cars behind him tried to avoid the wreck, they slammed into the man’s car, starting a chain reaction that ended up wrecking 10 cars.

The driver of the first car was arrested for DUI. There were no serious injuries, but three people were hurt, including one woman who had to be cut from her car.
