One killed ♦ Two injured in roll-over accident on Memorial Highway in Tampa ♦ Town n Country

TAMPA – According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff, a roll-over crash has killed one person and closed a stretch of road in Tampa. One person died when a Ford Explorer SUV flipped over several times just after 3 a.m. on Memorial Highway near George Road. Two others were injured an transported to local hospitals.

Memorial Highway was closed from George Road to Independence Parkway and traffic was backed up Veterans Expressway. Law enforcement officials said, the SUV was traveling eastbound on Memorial when the driver lost control and hit a median.

Witnesses reported that prior to the crash, the SUV was speeding, when the driver lost control hit the median and flipped over several times. The investigation is continuing and officials said the roadway would be closed for several hours as the accident is investigated.

TWENTY FIVE FHP TROOPERS work three crashes on I-75, I-275 and I-4 involving 131 vehicles

Hillsborough / Polk County — UPDATE — Fifty (50) crashes on three major highways involving 131 vehicles with more than a dozen people sent to hospitals. It all happened over a five-hour period on a Sunday afternoon. The FHP cites wet roads and heavy traffic as the common causes of these accidents.

Just after 3:00 p.m. on Interstate 75 – Northbound, One crash caused seven (7) others, including one involving a church charter bus with more than 40 people aboard. Nineteen (19) vehicles were involved, and six (6) people went to local hospitals. Northbound I-75 was closed for about three (3) hours. Traffic was re-routed off Interstate 75 at State Road 60 near Brandon.

Just before 5:00 p.m., Twenty three (23) more crashes happened on Interstate 4 Westbound, about three miles west of U.S. 27 in Polk County. That pileup involved forty eight (48) vehicles. As a result of these crashes, four (4) people were hospitalized. The traffic back up was not as bad as on I-75 northbound.

Then, shortly after 5:00 p.m., more collisions were reported on Interstate 275 – Southbound on the Howard Frankland Bridge just west of Kennedy Boulevard. This eight (8) vehicle crash caused eleven (11) accidents with more than sixty four (64) vehicles involved. As a result of these crashes, four (4) people were hospitalized. The southbound traffic was limited to just one lane of passage as the vehicles were untangled and moved off the bridge. Just before 9:00 p.m. the traffic flow resumed to normal.

Disney Reports 11 Injuries In 2nd Quarter of 2009 ♦ Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay & Wet 'n Wild ♦ NO INJURIES reported

ORLANDO -- Disney has reported more injuries during the second quarter than any other Central Florida theme park.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Walt Disney World had 11 injuries while Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Wet 'n Wild, had no reports of injuries for the April-June period.

WalMart Parking Lot Accident ♦ One person with serious injuries ♦ Florida Highway Patrol investigated

LEE COUNTY – Last month a two vehicle accident in the Wal-Mart parking lot left one person with life threatening injuries. According to the witness, a man ran a stop sign striking another car with four local high school students. After the impact he lost control of his vehicle going through a ditch and then striking a semi-truck parked at the Wal-Mart loading dock.

The man who ran the stop sign was taken to the local hospital for treatment of his accident-related injuries. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) investigated the accident. The condition of the four teenagers in the other vehicle is uncertain. All vehicles sustained moderate damage.

PORT CANAVERAL -- Thirty passengers from a Port Canaveral-based cruise ship were hurt during a shore excursion in the Virgin Islands.

According to Florida Today, passengers from Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Freedom of the Seas, were on an amphibious tour bus in St. Thomas Wednesday when the bus went off the road and crashed. The passengers had minor injures, but one had a broken ankle.

The passengers were on a seven-night Caribbean cruise and were expected to return to Port Canaveral on Sunday.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates are that approximately 11,600 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with fireworks. Three-fourths of the victims were male and about half were 10 to 19 years of age.

The Federal Hazardous Substances Act prohibits the sale of the most dangerous fireworks, including reloadable shells, "Cherry Bombs", aerial bombs, "M-80s" and "Silver Salutes." Florida law prohibits almost all devices that contain explosives. For example, firecrackers like "Black Cats" and "Ladyfingers" are illegal in Florida. Devices that are ignited and emit projectiles or launch into the air, such as "Roman Candles" and "Skyrockets" are also illegal.

Fireworks that are considered legal for the public in Florida are all hand-held or ground based devices which emit showers or sparks upon burning, but do not detonate or explode and cannot propel themselves through the air, and are approved by the State Fire Marshall's Office. Toy gun "caps", "smoke bombs", "party poppers" (which "pop" when a string is pulled), "snappers" (which "pop" when thrown on a hard surface), "snakes" (which produce a large snake-like ash when lit), and "sparklers" would be considered legal.

Broadway Ave and 70th Street • 3-vehicle collision • Car • Van • Tanker truck • East Tampa

TAMPA - Traffic is now back to normal on Broadway Avenue after a multi-car collision this morning. The crash occurred just after 6 a.m. at the intersection of Broadway Avenue and 70th Street. The crash involved a tanker truck, an SUV and a white passenger van transporting eight work-release inmates.

The initial investigation by Tampa Police indicates that the red Saturn driven east on Broadway by a woman, crossed the center line and hit the westbound van carrying the inmates. The driver of the red Saturn was transported to Tampa General Hospital and is in critical condition. The driver of the van carrying the inmates sustained minor injuries.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the inmates are mostly in jail for violations of probation, according to the sheriff's office. All the inmates were also transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

Bicycle Safety

According to The American Red Cross of Central Florida:

• Many bicycle injuries can be prevented by wearing a helmet. Always wear a correctly-fitting helmet when riding. Even children using tricycles or bikes with training wheels should wear helmets.
